“All human beings have basic rights that corruption constantly takes away from them. This being a humiliation that curtails the rights of those of us who are part of society – governments, multilateral entities, the private sector, the media and citizens in general – we all also have the duty to condemn it no matter where or who it comes from”. This is part of the message sent by the Chamber of Commerce, Industries and Agriculture of Panama (Cciap), in the framework of the recent celebrations of the International Day against Corruption (December 9) and Human Rights Day (December 10 ). These dates –according to the Cciap– propitiate a new call for reflection and action. “In the criminal sphere, where there is a corrupt person, there is a corrupter, so both must be condemned and socially isolated. Corruption actions must be pointed out, denounced, punished and alienated ”, stated the group. For the Cciap, fighting corruption is a duty and a right that must be promoted in all areas of society. “The time to act is now, otherwise it will be increasingly difficult to face the challenges of sustainable development, which for now is just a chimera or, worse, a speech,” they said.
Most of those apprehended in the Fisher operation had no criminal record. Likewise, these people took care not to transgress the law in any other type of conduct that was not related to drug trafficking or violence. Caraballo said that the ease with which this criminal group managed to introduce large amounts of money to the economic circuits also called attention.
The Government must manage debt payments for a total amount of $ 12,401 million between 2022 and 2026, as shown in the amortization profile of the public debt. In this period, there will be some more pronounced peaks, such as in 2024, the year of change of administration, when there are maturities for $ 3,445.82 million, and 2026, with another $ 3,055.21 million.
Ricardo Alberto Martinelli Linares , 42, was indicted in the United States for allegedly conspiring to launder $ 28 million in bribes from Odebrecht between August 2009 and September 2015. In a hearing held in the Court of the Eastern District of New York (Brooklyn), federal judge Robert Levy read the charges to Martinelli Linares and ordered that he remain in detention, at least until next Tuesday, when he will have another hearing in the that you could plead guilty to at least one of the three charges against you. Also in that prison is his brother, Luis Enrique, who on December 2 confessed his participation in the scheme to launder Odebrecht’s illegal payments, for the benefit of a “high-ranking official of the Panamanian government.” The identity of this “high official” has been kept secret and it is only known that he is a “close relative” of the Martinelli Linares. Last Friday, the prosecution reported that it provided additional information about this “official of the Panamanian government,” in a sealed document, presented on November 15. It also indicates that in the period that the bribes were paid in favor of the close relative of the two defendants, the construction company obtained multi million contracts for public infrastructure, “including a project that was a campaign promise from the official of the Panamanian government.”
Residents of townships such as Ancón , Bella Vista and Don Bosco, are appealing to citizen participation as an instrument to make their voice heard in the public consultations convened by the Municipality of Panama, to address issues such as projects with decentralization funds or changes of land use. However, leaders of the local development boards denounce that the municipal authorities are trying to take advantage of these processes, so they ask for greater transparency, especially now that Mayor José Luis Fábrega will have a historic budget. Citizens demand greater transparency in consultations
