The number of daily deaths and new infections of the respiratory virus Sars-CoV-2 is decreasing in the country. In the last 24 hours, one death and 102 new infections have been reported, highlighted the Department of Epidemiology of the Ministry of Health (Minsa) . According to the report, the cumulative number of deaths has risen to 7,292 since the start of the pandemic. And the accumulated number of cases is 470,264, of which 460,677 people recovered. In the last 24 hours they applied 4,616 tests, which yields a positivity percentage of 2.2%. In the country there are 2,295 active cases, of that total 2,077 are in isolation and 218 in hospitals. The cases in isolation are distributed as follows: 1,979 at home and 98 in hotels, while the hospitalized cases are reported 177 in wards and 41 in intensive care units (ICU). Regarding the process that is carried out at the Tocumen International Airport, the Minsa highlighted that the epidemiological surveillance report of international travel reveals that recently no passenger positive for Covid-19 was detected.

“We cannot allow a re-emergence of diseases that we previously had controlled.” This was the call made by Eduardo Ortega Barría, the Vaccine Advisor to the Ministry of Health (Minsa) and the National Secretary for Science, Technology and Innovation , who called for reinforcing the vaccination plan in the country. Ortega Barría recalled that the success of the immunization program against Covid-19 has its antecedents in that Panama has an expanded program with a “long tradition”, where it is vaccinated against 23 different antigens.

The magistrates of the Tribunal Electoral (TE) reported this Sunday, that they made the decision to reject bill 544, which reforms the Electoral Code, approved by the National Assembly in a third debate on Friday. “A decision that will result, on the one hand requesting the President of the Republic, to object to the aforementioned bill for reasons of unenforceability (unconstitutional) or inconvenience, and, on the other, in exercising the unconstitutionality claims”, highlighted in a statement. “After it is received, a new analysis will be made to determine if there are other issues that provide a basis for incorporating the official position that will be sent to the President of the Republic, requesting that the project be objected to as unenforceable and inconvenient,” they added. .

Panama did not achieve a good global or regional rating in the 2021 Rule of Law Index, a report prepared by the World Justice Project (WJP) , released this week. The country was poorly evaluated in key aspects to achieve a rule of law: absence of corruption and robust criminal and civil justice, as well as order and security. In the global ranking, Panama was ranked 71 out of 139 countries evaluated (1 is the best). While among the 32 from Latin America and the Caribbean that were analyzed, it was ranked 15th. In 2019, Panama was ranked 64th out of 126 countries evaluated that year.

At least 25 homes affected, several cattle dragged by the strong current and the evacuation of two older adults, was the preliminary cost left by the heavy rains that hit the district of Tonosí.
