An 18-year-old man was sentenced to 12 years in prison for the robbery, rape and murder of American Catherine Medalia Johannet, whose body was found on February 5, 2017 on Isla Colon , Bocas del Toro province.
A sentence of 120 months (10 years) in prison, by agreement of penalty, was the result of a hearing before the judge of guarantees, Teodolinda Cardoze, against Eric Rujano, 40 years of age, for the commission of the crime against the economic order (aggravated robbery) and collective security (unlawful possession of a firearm) for the robbery of a fast food restaurant, located on Calle 19, Río Abajo.
The Fifteenth Criminal Court warned that the process being followed against the ex-magistrate of the Supreme Court of Justice, Víctor Benavides, is still in the investigation stage by the Anti-Corruption Public Prosecutor’s Office .
Judge José Ayú Prado clarified that he has not held meetings to discuss the protection of constitutional guarantees filed by Ricardo Martinelli against the decision of magistrate judge Jerónimo Mejía, to maintain the competence of the process that is followed by the former president for the alleged commission of crimes against the inviolability of secrecy and the right to privacy, and embezzlement.
