In the last hour today we are joined by Raul Altamar to talk about a current event at the Museum of Contemporary Art……..
“Secretos de Nuestra Colección” (The Secrets of our Collection) came about from the desire to share the treasures of MAC Panama’s permanent collection with the public. This collection started when the museum opened its doors as PANARTE in 1962, and it currently holds 686 objects in 26 different techniques, including painting, sculpture, photography, and installation –among others– created between 1887 and 2016.
On the eve of celebrating Panama City’s 500-year anniversary, the moment is right to begin a conversation with artists, researchers, and the overall populace, about the importance, preservation, and future of one of the country’s most important private art collections.
This focus inward goes hand in hand with a reinvention process that Panama’s Museum of Modern Art started in 2017, in which the institution’s cultural relevance as a non-profit Foundation benefitting Panamanian society is contemplated.
The two shows that make “Secretos de Nuestra Colección”, “Naturaleza Escondida” (Hidden Nature) on the ground floor, and “¡Viva el collage! (ayer y hoy)” (The Collage Lives! – now and then) on the first floor, wish to create a bond and a sense of belonging with Panama’s art community. Sharing knowledge about art with people of all ages, as well as analyzing the great value of our own artistic heritage, is also a purpose of these exhibitions, providing helpful insights into how we face our future as a society through creativity.
