This morning we take another look at the necessity for donating blood, my guest in the eight o’clock hour is Dr Gabriel Rebollon from Sangre Panama. We already know about the importance of blood donation and has been given even more prominence due to the current Covid-19 pandemic Did you know if you have had Covid-19 your blood is especially needed?
If you have fully recovered from COVID-19, you can help patients who are currently battling the infection by donating their plasma. Since you had this infection, your plasma now contains COVID-19 antibodies.
These antibodies provided a way for your immune system to fight the virus when you were sick. For this reason, your plasma could be used to help others fight the disease.
Convalescent plasma is the liquid part of the blood collected from patients who have recovered from the new coronavirus disease, COVID-19, caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Patients with COVID-19 develop antibodies in the blood against the virus. Antibodies are proteins that can help fight infection.
Convalescent plasma is being investigated for the treatment of COVID-19 because there is no approved treatment for COVID-19 and there is information suggesting that it may help some patients recover from COVID-19.
