Our special guest this morning in the second hour is Patricia Zarate. Saxophonist and of course the Executive Director of the Panama Jazz Festival, now in its 22nd year.
As well as chatting about this years Festival we talk about Patricia’s new Album “Panamanian Suite”. A musical work that highlights the works written by American composers in Panama between 1880 and 1922. Panamanian Suite reimagines the context, sounds and meaning of those compositions. This music is presented and its meaning is analyzed in it first movement (Pre-Jazz) from the book Reimagining Panama’s Musical and Cultural Narratives of Jazz: Panamanian Suite, written by Patricia Zárate de Pérez and published in 2023. “The album is a sound journey that accompanies the story of the book. In this edition, music written between 1880 and 1922 in the United States promotes an image of Panama that contains prejudices about the isthmus that continue to our days. Some of these imaginaries include the idea that man of origin American Anglo-Saxon was the only one who thought about and built the Canal.
